Carbon Compensation Scheme Principles (for greenhouse gas emissions such as C02)

The production of CO2 from flights which cannot be avoided (mainly international long-haul flights) can be “compensated” by buying-back the “cost” of the greenhouse gas which is re-invested towards developing countries. The calculation and costs are defined according to a benchmark used by NGOs and organisations such as the French Environmental and Energy Agency.
The financial grant is handed over to NGOs working in developing countries, through carbon compensation management voluntary organisations (there are 40 or so of these organisations in France). With some of these organisations it is possible to choose which countries receive the donation. Given that this seminar is aimed at the Caribbean region, this compensation will be paid by the DIREN to the benefit of regional programmes.

Example of the calculation of Greenhouse Gas Emission and compensation costs
Assuming 60 international flights (mainly France/Martinique):
-This represents a budget of 40,000 euros (based on the average cost of a flight)
-This generates a total of 155.29 Teq CO2 (tons equivalent of CO2)
-Which would require a financial compensation of €3,726.96,which represents less than 10% of the international flight budget
